La beta de Sonic the Hedgehog 2 est sûrement celle qui aura fait couler le plus d'encre... Le dump de cette ROM (qui flottait dans l'anonymat le plus total sur le web) à été mis à la lumière du jour par Simon Wai en 1999. Cette version comporte beaucoup de differences intéressantes :

La plus grande est la présence d'un niveau effacé de la version finale : Hidden Palace Zone. Cette zone a peu de points commun avec celle du même nom de Sonic the Hedgehog 3, mais ses graphismes sont parmis les meilleurs du jeu. Malheuresement le niveau n'est pas fini et l'on se retrouve bloqué vers le quart ...

Un autre niveau disparu est Wood Zone : ce niveau se déroule dans une forêt dense peuplée d'arbres géants. La musique est celle de Metropolis Zone. Ici encore , le niveau est à peine commencé , et on peut marcher quelques secondes avant de tomber dans le vide ...

Il y a d'autres differences mineures : Ecran de démarrage, Level Select, organisation de certains niveaux.. Le meilleur moyen de les explorer est de télécharger la ROM disponible un peu partout.
